Max was born in Houston, Missouri. He graduated from Arlington Lamar High School in 1979. He received his B.A. from McMurry College (now University) in Abilene, Texas in 1984, Master of Divinity from Brite Divinity School at T.C.U. in 1990, and Doctor of Ministry from S.M.U. Perkins School of Theology in 2003. Max has two grown sons and a step-daughter. He also has five grandsons. Max is married to Carol Jo Burkhead. Max currently teaches eighth grade mathematics and is a licensed real estate agent with Texas Real Estate Executives. Max also serves on the McMurry University Alumni Board of Directors.
